On September 29, family and friends of Nulee “Ascencia” Kim attended the community send-off ceremony for the 2448th Aviation Support Battalion in Boone, Iowa.
Kim joined Delta Phi Lambda in fall 2016 as a member of the Beta Class from Nu Chapter, Iowa State University, majoring in biology with a minor in anthropology. She is currently in Fort Hood, Texas training before her assignment to the Middle East. Kim will been involved with the Iowa Army National Guard for five years in November. She has been a noncommissioned officer for almost two years. She is one of the 390 soldiers of the Iowa Army National Guard Unit. This deployment is the largest, single-unit deployment of the Iowa National Guard since 2010.
Kim is a fueler, she runs fuel missions to supply the battalion helicopters. Fuelers run rapid refuel points so once a helicopter touches down with the rotor still running, it is fueled, and immediately takes off. This process lasts six minutes.
“So far it’s pretty good,” Kim said about her current training. “We’re trying to get into a routine here in Texas but it’s rough being away from home.”
Kim misses the most her family, friends, boyfriend Joe and his dog Chancho. Kim will be missed by her chapter sisters as well.
“I’m sad that a mentor like my big will be away from not just me but her friends and family,” said Christine “Valoria” Barrett, Kim’s little sister. “I’m proud that she’s willing to do the dirty work and serve the country to protect those living he United States.”
Kim left a message to sisters: “I miss you guys already. I know we’ll be separated when we get back but I will never ever forget our connection to each other and I hope to see you when I come back from wherever I’m going.”
