As chapters across the country begin sorority recruitment this fall, they will be “discovering new horizons.” In accordance with the semester’s recruitment theme, The Jade Times spotlights Jemi “Phrysia” Puno, an alumna from Illinois State University, for August 2015.
Puno is a Delta Airlines flight attendant based in New York City. Although she is always far away from home, home doesn’t seem distant when she has the opportunity to visit sisters in different cities. Being a flight attendant also helps her to overcome anxiety of meeting new people, learning new things and travelling to new places.
“As a flight attendant, summer time is the busiest season for me, but it also means going on more international trips,” Puno said. “I got to go to London, Rome, Athens and Brussels these past few months. My most recent trip also brought me to Seoul, Korea, where I met with my member educator, (Mama!) Sister Jenn “Rubyx” Chung.”
“This summer has taught me not to be afraid to explore new places,” she said. “Though I’m used to flying domestic trips, I learned to step out of my comfort zone and work with new crew and learn new services on different aircrafts. Plus, the fun layovers make the longer flights much more rewarding!”
Puno graduated from Illinois State with in May 2013 with a bachelor’s of science degree in East Asian studies and a minor in international business. She credits the sorority for helping her adjust to her career and her travels.
“I feel like I learned how to work with coworkers’ different personalities thanks to the sorority and planning events with sisters with varying majors and backgrounds,” Puno said. “Also, being able to meet some of my ISU sisters in different parts of world would not have been possible if I didn’t join Delta Phi Lambda.”
