On Nov. 17, Iota Chapter hosted the 10th Annual Global Gala, a cultural showcase aimed to spotlight the diversity on Grand Valley State University’s campus. Global Gala has been popular in the past years and supported by alumnae of Delta Phi Lambda, students, professors and the community.
Since 2007, the founders of Global Gala had the goal of displaying the cultural diversity on campus through performances from student groups and the community. Collegiate and alumnae sisters worked to organize the event and recruit performers. Global Gala is special in that it brings together a wide variety of clubs and groups to perform their unique talents. Each year, over 300 people from all over western Michigan come to support Global Gala. This year, the audience watched performances by the Asian Student Union, KPOP Group Evolution, Taekwondo Club, Belly Dance Club, Linh Son Buddhist Temple Youth Group along with solo acts singing in a plethora of languages such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Spanish. Sisters from Iota Chapter also showcased a traditional Vietnamese fan dance along with stepping and strolling.
Global Gala offered free food, raffle prizes, as well as other activity booths. For example, there was a photo booth available where the crowd could capture memories with their loved ones during the event. There was also a Chinese calligraphy booth for people to write their names in a new language. At the event, there was also a fundraiser called “Minute to Win it” in which sisters raised over $100 to donate to the Children’s Healing Center. The Children’s Healing Center is a local charity that provides a safe, clean, and engaging environment for kids with weak immune systems to interact with others and supports social, emotional, and physical healing for kids and their families. The donations showed the support from the community and sisters who took pride in calling Grand Valley State University their home.
The active sisters of Iota Chapter had high expectations to fulfill, but they received positive feedback from those who enjoyed the event. Global Gala was a success this year and sisters hope that the ongoing dedication and support for Iota Chapter of Delta Phi Lambda continues. With this tradition of bringing awareness to cultural diversity, Iota Chapter hopes this event educates and brings harmony among people not only in their community, but to influence the entire world as well.
