Atlanta, GA – Delta Phi Lambda Foundation awarded its highest-funded scholarships to date during the 2016 national convention last August in New York City.
The scholarship recipients were evaluated and selected by a volunteer panel of alumnae sisters. These scholarships were made possible by donations received during the Empowering Amazing Women fundraiser held in Atlanta in May.
Houa Lee, a sister of Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.’s chapter at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, was awarded the Academic Excellence Scholarship in the amount of $500. Lee studies child and family development at UNCC, hoping to work for foster care or an adoption agency after graduation. The committee was impressed by her accolades, Dean’s List (spring of 2015 and 2016) and the Chancellor’s List (fall 2015). Lee has managed to achieve excellence all while working full-time, supporting herself since age 16. Lee expressed her gratitude to the donors that made this possible.
“I would love to thank the donors for the scholarship given to me,” Lee said. “This grant has helped me invest in a new laptop. It broke during the summer so I got the money just in time for the new school year.”
The committee awarded the Hannah Seoh Alumnae Scholarship, a professional development grant, to Tiffany Yi, a sister of Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc.’s Kappa chapter at Loyola University Chicago. Yi received an award of $500 to assist her as she pursues a master’s degree in higher education from Loyola University Chicago. The committee was impressed by her essay and her accolades, Dean’s List for four semesters at LUC.
Yi hopes to become a student affairs professional. In her essay, she wrote that she believes students should be able to co-exist in an equitable, mutually supportive society where they are all able to realize their full potential. Yi will use her award to help her study abroad in Rome to see how the community effectively utilizes available resources to meet the needs of diverse student populations.
“I will be using the Hannah Seoh Alumnae Scholarship towards the fees associated with my summer course,” she said. “The fees include program fee, study abroad fee, tuition, room fee, insurance, and flight. Although the grant only covers about 10 percent of the total cost, it is more than I could have asked for.”
Until the 2016 award, the scholarship award amount was $300. The Foundation hopes to continue to increase the award amount, hopefully leading to full-tuition scholarships. The next application period will open in early summer 2017.
Each year, the Foundation assembles a scholarship award committee to review the many applications for the Academic Excellence Scholarship and the Hannah Seoh Alumnae Scholarship. Comprised of former award recipients and Delta Phi Lambda alumnae, the committee reviewed each application for financial need, community engagement, and academic honors.
