On the weekend of Feb. 8, over 3,000 fraternity and sorority members from various national Greek councils joined together to participate in the AFLV Central Conference. AFLV, short for the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values, exists to accelerate progress in fraternity and sorority communities through change-enabling experiences.
Over the span of the weekend, sisters were able to participate in interactive workshops, listen to keynote speakers, and visit different vendors. The workshops presented offered advice and wisdom to our sisters that they could then take back to their respective chapters. Workshops included ways to become better sisters, different ways to promote our organizations, and different ways to approach confrontation.
This year’s honored keynote speaker at the AFLV Central conference was former Vice President, Joe Biden. His address focused on the importance of stopping sexual assault. Jackie Chu of the University of Iowa Colony Chapter, was randomly selected to sit in the VIP section and listen to Vice President Biden’s keynote address up close.“
I had a great time at AFLV listening to speakers who addressed on how to improve and become more aware as members in a sorority and as human beings,” said Esme ‘Diverge’ Li.
Our sisters were not only able to meet with members of different Greek organizations, but were also able to convene with members of our own chapters as well. Our sisters assembled for national updates to bring back to their chapters. One particular update was in regards to our national philanthropy. A new goal was made to raise $10,000 over the span of 5 years. Along with this goal, our organization aims to educate new sisters in a new way to become advocates for our philanthropy. Delta Phi Lambda has partnered with American Bone Health and new sisters will be trained on how to be an advocate of osteoporosis through the organization. In addition to meeting for professional matters, our sisters also met over dinner and reconnected with old faces or connect with new ones.
The weekend was filled with many laughs, memories, and lessons for all sisters who attended.
“AFLV is definitely worth attending,” said Yutin ‘Astryd’ Zhao. “It brings together people from all regions to meet and discuss important topics in the Greek community. It was also really fun hanging out and eating with sisters from other chapters in Indianapolis as well!”
